HorrorHound Magazine Issue #5 Cartoon Spot Illustration

First comic spot illustration for client HorrorHound magazine.
This image was to show how director Rob Zombie always casts his "usual suspects" of cast in every movie he does. It’s an imagining that he casts those regulars in prominent roles in his "reimagining" of the horror classic Halloween.
I would have no idea that in fact he WOULD cast all 3 actors (his wife is in there) in the Halloween remake.
Anyways,

Cartoons Tools Review: Xtranormal

Designing cartoons can be a lot of fun, but static images can only tell part of a story. Have you ever wished that you could create an animated cartoon, complete with voice acting and 3D characters? That’s exactly what Xtranormal offers.
Xtranormal can’t help with creating, say, illustrated maps or by book illustrators, but is a tool that will instantly turn a script that you create into a 3D animation. The voice options are limited, so you can’t expect to use Xtranormal to make a blockbuster cartoon which will take over Saturday morning TV, but it’s still a lot of fun, and it’s incredibly impressive technology wise.

Xtranormal really does live up to the idea of “If you can type, you can make movies”. Users can choose the setting, the characters, and the voices, and Xtranormal will then animate the characters as they read out what you’ve written. If you don’t like the stock collection of characters (a selection of men, women, and cute animal figures), you can download more, ranging from Army guys to monsters, super heroes, robots and stick-men.

It takes skill to make a good cartoon with Xtranormal. You can achieve decent results by simply typing in your script and accepting the default settings, but some of the word recognition is rather quirky. You may find that if you mis-spell words or get creative with punctuation you will achieve better results and the audio will be more natural sounding.
The basic version of Xtranormal is free. When you sign up for an account you get access to the online movie maker and the desktop software. Extra actors and sets must be purchased individually. For $10 a month, you get access to all actors and sets, as well as more sophisticated admin tools. For $50 per month, you get the ability to customize the actors, and the ability to make white-label videos.

Had to share this. Commissioned this cartoon illustration of me for my freelance business, prior to ImJustCreative.

At this time, I was going by the name of DigitalSlave and specialised in designing higher end holiday brochures etc.

When I hired the illustrator, my only requirements were that it had a retro Flash Gordon feel in terms of the computer equipment. Now bear in mind, this was over ten years ago now, so flat screen LCD’s were not exactly common place, certainly pre flat screen iMac. So it held more visual appeal to the retro future so to speak.

Even with flat screen monitors common place, this illustration still captures the very essence of what I wanted.

Tempted to find a new use for this, as I still have mad hair.

Egyptian Artists Fight for Freedom in New Exhibition

Artists in Egypt gathered together to take part in a new exhibition titled “Long Live Free Art” earlier this month. The exhibition started in Cairo on the 15th January, and featured succinct, clever and artistic cartoons and drawings that highlight the freedom of expression issues going on in Egypt today. The exhibition features cartoons including anti-censorship works such as “Your Fear is their Power”, and “Holy Pain”

The exhibition shows the Egyptian art world’s string resistance to the country’s new constitution, which was approved at the end of December 2012. Artists, curators, academics and critics, as in cartoons history, formed an unlikely partnership to speak out against Egyptian President Mohamed Morsi’s controversial charter, which was a victory for Islamists.
It’s not just artists that have spoken out against the new constitution. Members of the public have formed together to take part in mass protests, send open letters, and create their own street art. More demonstrations are expected to take place throughout the next few weeks, as people fight for their right to freedom of speech.
The “Long Live Free Art” exhibition is particularly interesting because the cartoons and art produced for it are the ultimate in powerful but peaceful protests. Fatenn Mostafa, founder of Art Talks Egypt, and curator of the exhibition, said that “The fear is that the Muslim Brotherhood will specify what is allowed and what is not allowed in art. The moment you put regulations on art, you kill it.”
The Long Live Free Art movement was inspired by the 1939 Art and Freedom Group’s manifesto, which was created by a group of artists who were fighting censorship all those decades ago. Today, art as a form of resisting censorship and control is just as important as it was then, and the power of the Internet, bloggers, and social media means that word of the protests can spread even more quickly.
